The word Reiki can be translated as spiritual energy or life force. ‘Rei’ meaning Spiritual or Sacred and ‘ki’ meaning energy or life force.

The students of Mikao Usui, the founder, used Reiki for their own personal or spiritual development and this was the primary focus.  Although they did treat others, this was seen as being a secondary usage.

Getting attuned to Reiki is easy and there are many Masters who will work with you in teaching the history of Reiki and perform attunements to Reiki energy.  There is a theory among Reiki Masters that when you are ready, Reiki will find you. That's probably what brought you to this site.

So, should you work with a Master on a face to face basis, or is getting attuned something you can do on-line? 

The most important point for me is that you need to find a Master you are comfortable working with. 

There are advantages and disadvantages to on-line reiki training and attunement.   The biggest disadvantage obviously is that you do not have personal contact.  How important is that?  Well everybody has their own views, but Reiki does not recognise time or distance, so on-line attunements are just as powerful and valid as those performed by someone standing in front of you.  It really is a matter of personal choice.

Well its cheaper for a start. Although the price may seem high, it does include three levels - Reiki 1, Reiki 2 and Master Level.   Typical costs for face-face learning will be around $150 - $175 for Reiki 1, $200 - $225 for Reiki 2, $700 - $900 for Reiki Master (a mind numbing $1050 - $1300) and that's before you add on your travelling expenses, overnight accommodation costs, meals and other sundries too.

You can learn at your own pace.  A typical face to face attunement will involve you going along for a day of instruction and attunement (possibly with a manual issued beforehand).  There will probably be at least one other person there learning with you.

·    Ongoing support.  On-line Reiki Masters have geared their practice up to support you from a distance so they will tend to have more resources and ongoing support available to you.  This suport is available both while you are learning and on an ongoing basis.

So if  you want to learn at your own pace and get a good understanding of the history of reiki with lots of support available when you need it, then you may want to choose a Reiki on-line training course.
